![]() When you think about going for walks, you remember specific walks you have taken. ![]() Furthermore, dogs seem to have a good memory for “place”, meaning they always know which fence is the most fun to bark at and which shop will give them a treat.īut do memories in dogs work the same way as they do in humans? No, not really. They may just process them differently from the way do.Living with dogs, you may think they have pretty good memories – after all, dogs who’ve been through obedience training remember commands and hand signals. Borns-Weil puts it, “dogs actually have powerful memories. Like us, they attach feelings to the memories but they don’t attach the narratives so common to human remembering.” So dogs will recall things in pictures or sounds or odors. They also experience the world differently than we do, relying on senses such as smell that are very underdeveloped in people. Because dogs don’t have language, their memories are stored nonverbally. “We tend to remember primarily with words. Of course, there is much we don’t know about how dogs build their memories or hold onto them, comments Dr. And they have to recall these details in a variety of contexts. “And then there are guide dogs who help blind people by remembering that a green light means go and a red light means wait, that the various walk/don’t walk signs indicate when it is safe to cross, and that cars turn even when the lights indicate that it is safe. ![]() Borns-Weil says, “even if they haven’t seen me in quite a while: ‘Oh yeah, that weird lady who gives me cheese for no apparent reason.’ “My patients remember me all the time,” Dr. They found her three blocks away in the park, next to the remains of the sandwich. A couple of days later, the dog got out on her own. “I had one friend,” the doctor says, “who was walking her golden retriever home when the dog started pulling her toward a half sandwich in a takeout box that someone had left near a bench in the park they were ambling through. They remember where they hid things - or saw things. They remember people they haven’t seen in years. Dogs can find their way home from dozens or even hundreds of miles away after they have been lost for ages, Dr. To figure out whether dogs have good memories outside of learning tricks, all you have to do is think about their recall ability. You might need to train him in a variety of environments before he can generalize the instructions.” What about memories of past experiences? He just may not know that it applies in that context, or he may be too distracted by the activity in the unfamiliar environment. ![]() It’s not that he doesn’t remember the cue. “But if you bring the mat to Grandma’s house with the extended family there and then tell him to go lie on it, he may not. “If you teach a dog in the quiet of your home to go lie down on his mat, he will learn to do it,” she says. Borns-Weil says, a dog’s seeming not to remember something is a contextual issue. That’s a communication problem, not a memory problem.” It’s like giving someone two pages of instructions on what to do and then rewarding them for doing one of those things without telling them which one. He’s being forced to try to figure out at random which action he’s being rewarded for. He just doesn’t know which one of those things has earned him the treat. He has done - and remembered - a dozen things in that time. If you say ‘Sit,’ and then go into the kitchen to get the treat, by the time you come back into the room and give it, the dog has looked right, looked left, blinked his eyes, licked his lips, scratched his nose, and perhaps yawned. “But that’s not a memory issue,” says the head of the Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic, Stephanie Borns-Weil, DVM. It makes it seem as though dogs have very poor memories. If you wait even 15 seconds, he will not know why you’re rewarding him and won’t be able to learn what you are trying to teach. We frequently say in Your Dog that to teach your pet a trick, you must reward him immediately after he follows through on the desired behavior. He may or may not remember the moment, just like a person.

Fantastic location for pretty much anything in Cardiff (minutes to the castle, shopping area and arenas - less than 30 minute walk to the Bay). Overall, this hotel is a great little find. Tea/coffee making facilities and a bonus of a fridge.ĭue to COVID, there is no cleaning taking place during your stay (I think unless you stay longer than 5 nights) but I saw people requesting extra supplies from reception so I don't think this would be a problem for anyone. My room was very comfortable and well equipped. Only thing that could be heard was occasional shouting from people on the street but it wasn't enough to disturb. I had a room on the third floor overlooking the shopping street and was worried about noise. Visitors are not asked to wear masks in common areas. Really warm welcome on reception with big perspex screens and reception staff in masks. The hotel is on one of the main streets in Cardiff and the entrance is slightly hidden within an arcade.
Your inkjet printer makes green in a similar way, using millions of tiny droplets of precisely-controlled mixtures of ink in its cartridges. If you mix blue and yellow paints on your palette, you'll get green. If you've ever used different colors of paint on a palette, you probably understand the basic mechanism of color printing. To make red, magenta and yellow inks are used, since magenta absorbs green light and yellow absorbs blue light, resulting in only red light being reflected back to our eyes. To make black, however, large dots of all the inks would be used. The light that is then reflected back to our eyes is what we see as different colors.įor example, to produce the color white, no ink dots are needed, since the white paper being printed upon will simply show through. As different colors of ink are combined, each ink absorbs (subtracts) its characteristic colors and amounts of light. Inkjet printers work via subtractive color mixing. ![]() By tweaking the values of each ink, a printer is able to produce countless colors. But, if you wanted to print a picture of a fire truck, you might use 0 cyan, 92 magenta, 98 yellow, 33 black. For example, if you wanted to print a picture of green grass, you might use the following combination of inks: 75 cyan, 0 magenta, 69 yellow, 31 black. ![]() Sophisticated computer chips inside the inkjet printer convert the electronic image data into precise instructions that are sent to the print head, which in turn communicates with the ink cartridges to tell them exactly how and when to produce their tiny droplets of ink.įor an image, each ink will have a value ranging from 0 to 100, where 0 means none of the ink is used and 100 means the image is completely saturated with the ink color. To make different colors, different amounts and proportions of each of the inks available are placed as dots on the paper. How tiny are those droplets of ink? They're usually about 50-60 microns in diameter, which is smaller than the diameter of a strand of human hair! The droplets are also positioned with extreme precision with resolutions of over a million dots per square inch. Piezoelectric inkjet printers use small electric charges to make a crystal vibrate, pushing ink out of the nozzle onto the paper. Thermal inkjet printers use heat to create bubbles of ink that "pop" out of the nozzle onto the paper. This is usually done using one of two technologies. Inkjet printers work by applying tiny droplets of ink to paper. ![]() How are such vivid color images featuring every color of the rainbow produced by just a few colors of ink? ![]() Newer models may have a few additional colors, such as light cyan, light magenta, and gray. Have you ever WONDERed how this is possible? If you look inside an inkjet printer, you'll probably find just four ink cartridges: cyan (a bluish color), magenta, yellow, and black. Using special photographic paper, you might be able to print your own photograph-quality images right at home. In fact, it's probably an inkjet printer, and it most likely can print in vivid colors. If you have a computer (or several) at home, there's a good chance you also have a printer. Sure, we're a bit spoiled by modern technology. There's no way to edit ink on parchment, and it's not easy to erase either! Aren't you glad you live in modern times rather than the Middle Ages? For example, if your teacher assigns a three-page essay, you can type it on your computer and, when it's finished, simply print it out on a printer to turn in.īack in the Middle Ages, though, you would've needed to use a scroll of parchment, a bottle of ink, and a quill from a bird feather. New HX developments focus on their outstanding sealing properties rather than on fastening. It is the preferred solution for numerous applications such as in roof rack assemblies, battery packs or enclosure covers. This seal can be applied under the flat head of stocked standard parts, in all materials and shank shapes, offering OEM customers very short delivery times. Slight variations in seal thickness may influence head height and grip range, but a correctly installed Tubtara (H)DPX ensures an IP 67 waterproof assembly. The material offers a temperature resistance from -40☌ to 100☌ for continuous usage (150☌ peak temp), and is gap filling, forming a robust seal between mating surfaces. The polyurethane seal compound is resistant to many automotive oils, antifreeze and transmission fluids, and has a sealing capacity exceeding 150 bar. Therefore Dejond developed the (H)DPX series, involving a non-reactive peripheral seal, made of flexible, organic-based material, applied to the under-head bearing surface of a flat head Tubtara rivet nut. ![]() Originally designed to prevent leaks in a boot hinge assembly in a premium car make, the watertight HX Tubtara is a trusted solution in many other challenging applications too.Īs application requirements become increasingly complicated, other watertight rivet nut solutions had to be conceived. The HX design is IP 68 guaranteed under Dejond test conditions, and is available in thread sizes M5 to M8. The under-head seal provides excellent protection against ingress of fluids, moisture, oil or dirt, even under high pressures up to at least 10 bar. This guarantees a well-functioning seal, ideally positioned away from possible burrs or sharp hole edges and protected against UV light. The hex-shaped shank prevents spin out, resisting a torque-to-turn force of at least 30Nm in M8.Īfter setting, the special head design ensures metal-to-metal contact on either side of the O-ring, that firmly remains in the conically shaped recess, resulting in an optimal seal compression. ![]() Designed with a closed end and a large flanged head with a cylindrical groove and O-ring seal mounted underneath, Dejond’s cold-formed HX blind rivet nuts in steel and stainless steel offer a worry-free, watertight fastening solution in many critical applications.ĭuring rivet nut installation an axial crimping action performed with a setting tool the O-ring seal slides into the groove and is compressed between the flanged head and the plate or profile the rivet nut is installed in. ![]() (Plus you have to clarify where cheesecake stands.) The Jejune Institute presents itself as a responsible for many revolutionary products, but it’s unclear whether it’s a known company in this reality. Its premise is a quartet of strangers (Segel, Lindley, Andre 3000 Benjamin, & Sally Field) who become friends playing an elaborate scavenger hunt/LARP about the feud between The Jejune Institute & The Elsewhere Society. Creator Jason Segel relocated it from San Francisco to Philadelphia. I didn’t read about the original game or watch its documentary so I would be surprised. Sometimes it is called a sandwich knife, although now, most makers have an offset knife pattern that is more suitable as a sandwich knife. Because utility knives are narrower than a chef's knife to reduce friction between the knife and food being cut, there is not sufficient clearance over a cutting board to make a utility knife a good choice for chopping. Utility knives, as the name implies, are used for many jobs involving precision slicing. Utility: These are smaller than a chef knife and larger than a paring knife, usually with a 5 to 6 inch blade. Other Knife Typesīeyond the three most popular knives, you may have a need for one of these: A good sharpening service will be able to sharpen serrated knives without difficulty. Though many people think that serrated knives cannot be sharpened, this is not true. However, if straight edged knives (such as the paring knife) are kept very sharp, they will be able to do slice tomatoes and other fruits more efficiently than a serrated knife. Beyond breads, serrated knives are good for tomatoes and peaches and other fruits that have a skin that can bruise easily. The long serrated knife is often called a bread knife because it is required for slicing breads that require a back and forth sawing motion. The Japanese paring knife is called a petty knife. It can be used to peel vegetables and fruit, take the eyes out of potatoes, trim meats, and cut pastry dough - any job that requires some delicate cutting work. The paring knife has a blade of between 2 1/2" to 4 inches and is only about 3/4" wide at its widest point. ![]() The most common size is 8 1/4 inches or 210 mm. The chef's knife often seems too large to novices, but with some practice it becomes the knife of choice because it is efficient across a wide range of tasks. French and Japanese chef's knives will have thinner, longer blades to reduce friction between the knife and food being cut, while German-style chef's knives will be wider across the blade for better chopping. Generally the blade will be at least 1 1/2" tall and should gently taper to the point. The chef's knife will have a blade ranging from 6 to 10 inches long (with the most popular being 8"). With three multi-purpose knives, you can perform almost every cutting job, while other knives have more specialized uses. You could slice a roast with a paring knife, but it will be much easier and you'll do a better job if you use the right knife (a slicing or carving knife). Knives are made differently for different functions. With all the knife styles out there, from utility knives to chef's knives, let alone santoku and yanigiba, it can be daunting to find the right knife for a task. |
